Saturday was time trials to get ready for the meet next Saturday. He did so well, and I've never seen him so focused. During the freestyle race I could tell he was tired but he wouldn't grab the lane rope (his age group is allowed to touch the rope and catch their breath if necessary during the 25 m race). He just kept swimming and ended up coming in 1st in his heat. He even tried the backstoke which he only started learning this week. As he was waiting for the race to start, he was practicing his arms.
This is a perfect match for him, he gets to be part of a team but he can compete as an individual. He'll never be great at team sports like soccer or basketball, its too crowded and he gets intimidated but here he can really excell. He beamed with pride after each race and I can see his self-esteem getting higher. We'll be mighty Gators for years to come.
Getting ready for the 25 m freestyle race.
Coming into the finish of the 25 m backstroke.

ReplyDeleteLove to see them finding something they enjoy so much!
ReplyDeleteYou know, they do have kids' triathlons-- c'mon Whitney, he wouldn't be a Smith if he didn't have a couple of those notches on his belt...
